I admit it, learning a new language is not given to all. You must have a passion for languages, help and above all, time to be able to assimilate all the subtleties of the language.
Before leaving for a new destination, I like to learn a minimum of key phrases. As I like going to small villages and non-touristic areas, it is sometimes necessary to be able to communicate with the locals in their language. Like to ask for the right way or get out of trouble.
There are several methods to learn a new language, but nothing is worth the practice. What works best for me are the audiobooks. I have a busy life and I do not have too much time to take formal courses or read books. If you have friends who speak the language you are trying to learn, this is the best way to correct yourself.
Once you have chosen your method, here are 10 sentences to know in the language of the country before leaving for vacation:
First the essential words:
- Yes / No
- Hello / Good afternoon / Good evening / Good night
- Goodbye
- Thank you
- Beer / Wine / Coffee / Tea / Water / Juice / Liqueur / Alcohol
- Help
And here are the 10 sentences to know:
- Hello, how are you?
- Excuse me for disturbing you / Can I disturb you?
- Where are the closest toilets?
- I’m lost, can you help me find my way? To understand the answer, you should also know the words: straight, turn, back, next to, left and right.
- How much does it cost? To negotiate, you need to know the numbers from 1 to 10, then 100, 1000, 10000, and so on.
- How do I get to the train, bus, subway, bank, restaurant, hotel?
- Where do I buy tickets? To buy bus or train tickets, knowing the days of the week is essential. As well as knowing how to say today and tomorrow.
- What are the opening hours?
- I would like to rent a room for X people.
- May I have the bill, please.
If you cannot make yourself understood, a drawing is worth a thousand words … with a minimum of talent of course!
