If you are like me, you can not sleep well on an airplane. Some people can sleep anywhere, as my travel companion of the recent years. There could be a music festival or an explosion and he would find a way to fall asleep like a baby. I envy him a little… the real truth, very much!
For myself, as soon as there is action, noise or light, it is almost like the title of the movie “mission impossible”. I am the type of person who does not like to lose as second of my precious vacation. And this includes recovering my lost sleep hours. I have discovered some tricks over time that work for me and surely will enhance your sleep on your next trip.
So here are my tips to sleep on an airplane
-
Try not to sleep too much the day before
For me, this step is very easy, because I always finish preparing my luggage the day before. The outcome is my peace of mind and not to worry to have forgotten something. Airline tickets are often cheaper when traveling on a weekday, so I often work the day of my departure. I always make my preparations late in the evening. If you are used sleeping 9h, try to pull out a few hours, but not too much, you do not want to be too cranky!
-
Wear comfortable clothing
Your new skinny dress or a jumpsuit with a belt are pretty, but are not the best choice for comfort. I would never say to wear a pajama, even if I’ve seen it before on an airplane. Instead, seamless clothes or with elastic material do the trick.
-
Do not dress too light
In a plane, it is very rare to have an ideal temperature; it is either too cold or too hot. Some airlines will provide free coverage, but not always. Prefer a closed shoe to a pretty sandal and plan a waistcoat in case the north wind wakes up.
-
Acquiring a good head support
To be more comfortable, nothing beats a good pillow or head rest. A plane moves a lot, the more your head is stabilized in the same position, the more you could rest properly. There are several types of pillow on the market, you have a lot of choices available.
-
Wear a mask
An airplane, even during a night flight, will always keep a minimum of light on. If you are easily distracted by anything that moves, a mask will help you to sleep and reach the world of dreams …
-
Find a way to reduce noise
If you can not fall asleep with noise, consider bringing ear plugs. Sometimes, plugs are not enough, as they do not cut all the sounds. In this case, bring with your favorite relaxing music. It is better than hearing the snoring neighbor.
-
Do not drink or eat
For drinking, you know why. The more you drink, the more you will have to get up to go to the toilet. For food, it is best to eat light and avoid the sugar that gives energy. Basically, avoid alcohol and stimulants like caffeine and sugar.
-
Choose your seat
Try to choose a bench near the window. This way, you will be less disturbed by passengers who want to go to the toilet or stretch their legs. And in the same vein, choose a bench away from the toilet because they are noisier and there is more back and forth.
That’s it, a good siesta is waiting for you!
